want

Have you ever felt you were rushing certain areas of your life? In the sense you want more than you have, no matter the price?

Too many times in our lifetime, we look at our peers and we see what they have and what we don't. We see what we want and what we cannot have. All too often do we forget the things we do have.

Yes, these times are scary. Everything costs way more than it used to and we make the same amount of money we did before all of this inflation started. But once again, why do we always focus on the lack in our lives?

We lack to think that in reality the only thing we do lack is the thoughts of knowing what we don't lack.

give.me.sleep

No needles are needed. I don't have to run from the law. My teeth won't fall from the gums. Still, I'm a user.

No matter what, I can't get enough sleep. If Sam's Club sold it in bulk, I wouldn't be able to buy enough. I'm a millenium kid, living on six hours of sleep and eighteen hours of work a day. Email, text messages, phone calls, meetings, instant messages, microwaves, McDonald's, broadband, digital cameras. Instant satisfaction with no gratification.

I'm empathetic to those younger than me who do not know what it's like to answer a telephone in their house without first knowing who is on the other line; to those who do not know it took 45 minutes to download one mp3; to those who have never had to tell their friend a lie in actual speech, and not one made up of quick text; and to those who have never known anything more than 50 television channels with nothing to watch.

Whether it be two Big Macs for four dollars, working the job of three people due to company downsizing, or believing Hollywood is real life, we are killing ourselves more and more each day. We know it and it seems to me that we welcome it as well. We're trying to find ways to live longer, yet we destroy ourselves earlier in the process.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood told me to relax. That was in the '80's. MTV was hip and fresh. Rap music was new and different. No one knew what the internet was. ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS was the only TV you needed. Life was easy. Too bad I was too young to remember it.

There is no hope for a civilization which starts each day to the sound of an alarm clock. ~Author Unknown

soul.embraced

Taking a last minute picture session is tough. What's more tough? Having only outdoor locations to shoot in and on the day of the shoot, it's about 37 degrees in raining like crazy. We took the first set of pictures in a dilapidated house that one of my friend's grandparents used to live in. The house had holes in the ceiling, with the light and rain coming through. We had to watch our step, because a lot of the floor was caving in, which made for an interesting shoot. Because of the rain, we had to find some more locations that we could shoot at, so the first thing we came up with was bridges. It was all done on a whim, and the pictures from the bridges came out as good, if not better than the house, I think. Look for Soul Embraced's new album, "Dead Alive" on Solid State Records this spring.

Would your beard and hair have grayed? Would you still watch the Simpsons every Sunday and laugh like you did then?

Would you still be climbing those towers for an easy paycheck? Would you have finally made amends with your other son? Would your parents still have died within two years of your passing?

I bet you would be proud of me.

I sure hope you would be.

today, i was given the opportunity to take promotional pictures of "the" band who got me into metal and hardcore. i'm such a fan boy of this band, that i even have their lyrics tattooed on my body. i've never been more nervous about taking band pictures than i was today.

i had previously met all the members of the band, except the vocalist. he was as intimidating as i expected. every time we would move locations, he wanted to see the pictures. i normally don't like to show people the pictures before they've been post-processed, but there was no way i wasn't going to allow him.

he taught me to be more vocal when i'm taking pictures. tell them how to posture their bodies, raise their chins, turn their bodies. i'm a bad director, but he helped me realize that i'm technically at fault if i don't get a good shot. it was definitely a learning experience that i'm grateful for, along with the opportunity.

it would take a lot to top the shoot today, for the sheer fact of who i did it with. if you're wondering who it is, for some reason not been able to figure it out, and want to see some pictures, well, too bad. it's a secret...at least for a little longer.
